Several companies are offering consumers hundreds of dollars for not-so-outdated smartphones, which are more prevalent now as trade-ups occur more frequently.

Some used phones can fetch as much as $200, said Anthony Scarsella, the chief gadget officer at Gazelle, a trade-in service for consumer electronics.

Other companies pay consumers on the spot. The aptly named ecoATM is a machine that spits out cash in exchange for used devices.

Gazelle’s advantage lies in its ability to start the recycling process wherever it’s most convenient for the customer.

“You select the condition and we send a shipping label and a box,” he said. “Sometimes you’re paid within 24 hours.”

Gadgets are sent to Gazelle’s facilities in Dallas where they are wiped clean of data — and every phone is checked against a database run by Recipero to determine if it’s been lost or stolen. Recipero is also working on amassing serial numbers for tablets and computers.

Phones go out through several channels once they’ve been wiped and checked. Gazelle will resell individual phones on eBay or Amazon, or work with wholesalers that resell used devices in Asia, South America and Africa.

The service gives consumers another reason to upgrade — giving people in the developing world access to high-end models that are otherwise too expensive to buy new, Scarsella said.

“You get the money for the old phone to upgrade to a new one and someone else gets to have access to an iPhone or Android at a much lower price,” he said.

Opportunities for Gazelle are increasing as the average lifespan for a cell phone is now just 18 months, according to government and industry figures.

Gazelle accepts damaged gadgets, but in exchange for lesser cash. Devices that can’t be resold are turned over to one of two recyclers — Cloud Blue in Georgia or Eco Phones in Dallas.

The San Diego-based ecoATM rewards customers with cash at self-serve kiosks around the country. The process involves a sliding door that opens an “inspection station” where customers can place their device for the machine to assess the quality and determine a price.

Customers are paid cash if they accept the offer, but only after they are provided an option to donate a portion to charity.

A valid driver’s license and thumbprint are required as a way of deterring thieves from cashing in stolen goods. There are more than 400 of these kiosks nationwide.

Phones lacking significant resale value are recycled. The company holds the highest certifications for e-waste recyclers.

“People are recognizing that e-waste is a real problem and that there are convenient solutions for responsibly disposing of unwanted electronics,” Tom Tullie, chairman and CEO of ecoATM, said in a release.

YouRenew has a similar get-green, go-green mission, and allows customers — whether individuals or corporations looking to unload phones or laptops in bulk — to receive a price quote online. Shipping via UPS is free for electronics with value. Payment is sent by check.

The company is up-front about its environmental commitments, and in addition to making sure all electronics are responsibly recycled, YouRenew makes a matching donation to Carbonfund.org — a carbon offset organization — for each device recycled.
